Muyil - Relatively Untouched Ruins

Muyil - Mayan Ruins

Near Cancun, Mexico

Visiting the ruins of a lost civilization that have been carefully reconstructed to give a sense of what it was like to live in those ancient times is one way thing. But for more adventure, visit ruins that are still being unearthed. At Muyil, you feel like Indiana Jones. Here the archealogical work is still underway, the jungle being pushed back and the temples and buildings being uncovered.

Muyil is the biggest of the Mayan sites so far discovered in the vast Sian Ka'an Biosphere Preserve which covers 1.5m acres of Yucatan jungle. The area was first settled around 300 B.C. and thrived up until the Spanish conquest in the 1500's A.D. The excavations so far show no sign the Spanish ever discovered this area. It went unnoticed until 1926 and has only begun excavations and solid archealogical research in the 1980's.

Come here to avoid the crowds and to get a sense of the wonder of uncovering ruins in a jungle. And don't forget to take the walk from the ruins on a raised wooden path through the heart of undisturbed jungle to the freshwater lagoon.
